The storm took more than 100 lives and left in its aftermath more than $50 billion in damages. My step-son Derek Boyer lives on New York's Long Island Sound in the town of St. James. He tells of 100-mile-per hour winds, hundreds of downed trees in the neighborhood, and battling hypothermia as he and those in his neighborhood suffered brutally cold nights waiting two weeks for electricity to be restored. For every story like Derek's, thousands remain untold. CoatingsPro Magazine, its advertisers, and its readers all offer our heartfelt sympathy to those stricken by Hurricane Sandy. And during the rebuilding process, we offer the support of our industry: from the newest greenhorn on the smallest coatings crew to the most senior executive at the largest paint and equipment manufacturer. It seems that builders of the era discovered a special type of volcanic sand called "pozzuolana" that mixed with lime and water to create a strong and enduring construction material we now call concrete. Roman builders didn't pour the admixture into formwork but packed it in and around stones of various sizes to create structures, according to R.E. Shaeffer's Reinforced Concrete: Preliminary Design for Architects and Builders. Amazingly, some ancient concrete buildings, bridges, and piers stand to this day. But a lot has changed in 2,200 years. Those attending the World of Concrete show (February 5 – 8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center) are apt to hear about innovations such as self-consolidating concrete, ultra lightweight concrete panels manufactured with carbon fiber, tilt up technology reaching new heights (nearing 100 feet/30.48 meters), and lightweight aerated autoclaved concrete blocks. Of course, all of these forms of concrete need protection by high performance coatings. What better place to get caught up, or stay current, than the world's leading concrete trade show? Historians don't know exactly when the first cave dweller decided to begin living outdoors. But very likely one of the first things that occurred to Grok was that he needed a roof over his head. A lot has changed in 20,000 years. Those interested in learning about energy saving coatings, spray polyurethane foam (SPF), sustainable building materials, and all the latest roofing innovations may want to check out exhibits and conferences at the International Roofing Expo (February 5 – 7 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas). The Roofing Expo is a great place to network, too.
