Madison Coatings is headquartered in Hammond, Ind., and employs 60 coatings applicators. They specialize in high-rise exteriors as well as parking structures, theme parks, chemical facilities, and sewage and waste treatment structures. tAll order To complete the work on the multi-story Cook County Temporary Juvenile Detention Center buildings, Hendrick and his crew used 12 stages (working platforms) provided by Stone Mountain Access and Spider Staging. According to Hendrick, Liftworks also provided two 80-foot (24 m) boom lifts and a 40-foot (12 m) rough terrain scissors lift for areas that were not accessible with the working platforms. Using the stages and lifts, the 18-member Madison Coatings crew worked on the three buildings simultaneously. Given the dangerous condition of working high off the ground, Hendrick was quick to point out that the safety of the crew was the main concern at all times during the job. "The crew was 100 percent tied off and had harnesses with retractable lanyards at all times when working on the stages or lifts," said Hendrick. The crew also wore standard personal protective equipment, such as hard hats, steel-toed boots, and safety goggles. In addition, a third-party consultant, Sheffield Safety and Loss Control, conducted independent safety audits during the project. "It had been at least 25 years since the building had been coated, and there were areas of failing lead-based paint that had to be removed prior to beginning any other surface preparation or coating application," explained Hendrick. As a National Industrial Services Union Painting and Coatings Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) QP1, QP2, Lead Paint Removal (C3), and Lead-Safe Certified Contractor, Madison Coatings is familiar with lead abatement and mitigation procedures and was up to the task. Hendrick and his crew utilized two NLB closed-cell collection systems to remove the areas of 230,000 ft² (21,368 m²) dURATION: 500 days UNUSUAL FACTORS/CHALLENGES: ¢ Lead abatement and mitigation occurred due to the existing lead-based paint on the exterior of the buildings ¢ There was a winter shutdown period due to temperatures that were too cold to apply the specified Tnemec system ¢ The Tnemec coatings system played a role in helping the buildings achieve LEED certification MATERIALS/PROCESSES: ¢ Applied Tnemec's Series 135 Chembuild primer at a dry film thickness of 3–6 mils (76–152 microns) over all exterior areas ¢ Applied Tnemec's Series 215 Surfacing Epoxy on any pitted areas of the steel ¢ Applied 2–6 mils (51–152 microns) of Tnemec's Series 27 F.C. Typoxy to all areas of the exterior ¢ Installed Tnemec's Series 1071V topcoat at a dry film thickness of 2-3 mils (51–76 microns) ¢ Applied Isolatek's CAFCO Blaze-Shield fireproofing material to the exposed soffits after demolition of existing panels and prior to installation of the new soffit ceiling panels SAFETY CONSIdERATIONS: Above The Madison Coatings crew power-washed the exterior a second time with a 6,000 psi (41 MPa) washer before caulking around the exterior joins and applying a new sealant. ¢ Wore harnesses with retractable lanyards, hard hats, steel-toed boots, and safety goggles ¢ Had a third-party consultant, Sheffield Safety and Loss Control, conduct independent safety audits during the project ¢ Monitored air in the interior of the buildings, since the building was filled with juveniles during the work on the exterior July 2013 g www.coatingspromag.com 59
