diligently to coordinate with multiple third-party consultants and inspectors. Hendrick also recognizes that without a top-notch crew and a good relationship with the coatings manufacturer, the project wouldn't have gone so smoothly. "Chris [Wascher] was out at the jobsite every week and provided us with the product support we needed," said Hendrick. With support like that, the project is sure to be a success. LEED addresses the entire lifecycle of a building, which is where coatings come into play. Coatings that meet the LEED requirements for reduced VOCs can help a building earn credits toward its LEED certification. "Of the Tnemec coatings used on the Cook County Temporary Juvenile Detention Center, the Series 135, 215, and 1071V helped the owner qualify for LEED certification," stated Wascher. "In addition, with a product like the 1071V that has a 15-year warranty, the coating system aids in long-term sustainability by keeping the building owner from having to go back and recoat every few years. Not only is this good for the environment, it also provides financial savings from a materials and mobilization standpoint," he added. Chilly Conditions The story of the Cook County Temporary Juvenile Detention Center wouldn't be complete without mentioning one of the biggest challenges faced while working on a job in Chicago: the imminent arrival of cold, windy, and wet weather. With a project of this magnitude, Hendrick knew that a weather delay was pretty much a sure thing. "As with many coating products, the Tnemec coatings require a minimum of 40-degree Fahrenheit [4° C] surface temperature for application. In Chicago during the winter, this most likely meant that we would have to stop work on the buildings for a couple of months, maybe more," said Hendrick. As winter approached, Hendrick worked with Cook County and received a 90-day extension on the contract, bringing the project duration to approximately 500 days. Madison Coatings had planned for the delay and was able to stay on schedule without any trouble once Mother Nature turned up the heat again in the spring. teAMwork equAls suCCess It is no small feat to complete a 230,000-square-foot (21,368 m²) exterior recoat on schedule and with very few problems. Much of the success of this project was due to the proper planning of Hendrick and the Madison Coatings crew.
