Letters Editor, Regarding the story called "Running on Empty" in the November 2013 issue, I have several questions. Do coating manufacturers recommend mixing diferent coatings for new system installations? Is this system approved by the other manufacturers used? Did an independent laboratory conduct performance tests? What case studies show performance expectations of 15 years for this exact 14–16 mil (356–406 microns) dry flm thickness (DFT) system? What was the DFT of the prior coating installation? What circumstances allow brush blasting as an acceptable technique on previously applied coatings in immersion service? Kellie Allen Fort Lauderdale, FL Ms. Allen, We appreciate the follow-up questions to this article. It's always great to know that our readers are so interested in the projects featured in CoatingsPro! Although we may not be able to answer all of the questions you brought up in the space allotted, we have gathered a few answers for you. First, please check out www.gracedistributing.com for the list of coatings manufacturers that have recognized the compatibility with LifeGuard as a primer. Although not all manufacturers are on this list, the barge owner was willing to accept the long-term studies as well as the Lloyd's Registry Certification for LifeGuard as a universal primer for underwater applications with marine epoxies. As for the preparation of the surfaces, the crew followed several NACE International/Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) standards, including SSPC-SP-1: Solvent Cleaning prior to NACE No. 4/SSPC-SP-7: Brush-Off Blast Cleaning and what was formerly NACE No. 5/SSPC-SP-12: Surface Preparation and Cleaning of Metals by Waterjetting Prior to Recoating. The FibreCrete™ family of polymer linings delivers a corrosion-resistant barrier with lower permeability than alternative fake-flled products. Spray application makes it much less labor intensive than matte systems thereby minimizing downtime and expense. FibreCrete™ is ideal for preserving secondary containment, ducts, stacks and process vessels where chemical exposure and physical demands are extreme.
