Office Space Because it is water-borne and has no volatile organic compounds (VOC), the Polyglass system is environmentally friendly. It's also sustainable, requiring a recoat instead of tear off. As for personal protective gear, all crew members used eye protection for all of the phases. And because the roofs were surrounded by parapet walls that were four feet (1 m) tall, no fall protection was required. Do Not Disturb Another advantage of this system is that applying it doesn't cause a lot of disruption to the tenants, Ewart explained. "It's a quiet, clean, smooth operation," he said, which keeps the client happy and the work moving. And because Polyglass is made to be reapplied, Mulligan added, upkeep and repairs are easier than other systems may be. "Te Polyglass system itself is sustainable, so in 10–12 years, you can go back and reapply to extend the life of the roof instead of doing a complete tear of," Mulligan added. "So they made repairs and recoated with the existing roof. Tat also limits the amount of material going to landflls." While Polyglass is relatively new in the roof coating business, they've been in the roofing business in the United States for 20 years, Mulligan said. "One of our differentiators is that our company is really focused on research and development. We're always looking for ways to improve the actual product. A lot of people invested a lot of time in making the formula to be one of the better ones available on the market. It's something we're very proud of, and we stand behind our warranties." Market Trend As for the result of all that hard work, the project left the building with a white roof, which is important for California residents because it refects the heat and sun. "Te coating provides a solution to the white roof, but it's also sustainable and lasts for years to come," Mulligan said. On top of the polyester fabric, the crew spray-applied two coats of white elastomeric coating at 3 gallons per 100 square feet (11 L/9 m²). Each coat was sprayed in one pass and took 24–48 hours to cure. 62 JANUARY 2014 COATINGSPROMAG.COM As Melissa Mulligan of Polyglass explained, "If you can sustain the existing life of a roof…you're providing service to the building owner and creating the potential for repeat business down the line." "It's a win-win, because it provides a white roof while still being environmentally friendly." Ewart said applying the coating now saved the client from having to remove the entire roof and install a whole new system later. "Tey have postponed re-roofng some 15–20 years and could possibly continue coating the roof, making this process 100 percent sustainable," Ewart said.
