Feature BUILDING ENVELOPE WATERPROOFING Revitalizing Dallas: Waterproofng a Park Deck BY JENNIFER FRAKES PHOTOS COURTESY CHAMBERLIN ROOFING & WATERPROOFING I In the 1960s, the Woodall Rogers Freeway was constructed, forming a major artery in the Dallas, Texas, transportation system, running just north of downtown and directly through the city. For years, it served as one of the most efcient ways for Dallas residents to get from point A to point B. However, in the early 2000s, as the downtown and uptown areas of Dallas became increasingly popular for business, nightlife, and residential growth, the freeway divided these two cultural hubs. A plan was developed to build a park deck over Woodall Rogers Freeway that would allow residents to have access to the entire city by means of walking, biking, and trolley. Klyde Warren Park officially opened on October 27, 2012, a milestone day for the city of Dallas — a milestone that could not have happened if it wasn't for the hard work of the Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing crew and the comprehensive waterproofing system of Henry Company. Read on for more details about this awe-inspiring project and the crucial role that these coatings played in making it possible. Keepin' It Dry "Once city officials approved the concept to build the park deck, Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing met with architects and design engineers to provide input on how to properly and permanently waterproof the deck," explained Andy Wharton, operations manager on the job. Waterproofing on this job was imperative, as the park deck would be even with the street level, and the freeway would flow freely via tunnel under the park deck. According to Wharton, the importance of waterproofing is two-fold. First, the waterproofing system ensures the integrity of the concrete, protecting the cars traveling 86 Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing met with architects and design engineers to help decide how to waterproof the Woodall Rogers Freeway park deck in Dallas, Texas — a 3-acre (12,141 m²) project. in the tunnel below the park from falling concrete. Secondly, green space requires extensive irrigation; therefore, a system needs to be in place that can capture and properly drain such a high volume of water. Te sheer size of the project, which used fve-and-a-half acres (22,258 m²) of waterproofing materials, required Chamberlin to work with the general contractor to come up with a durable, cost-efcient, and warrantable waterproofng system. In addition, the entire system needed to comply with both the Buy America and Buy American Acts, meaning all components of the system needed to be manufactured in the United States. Luckily, Chamberlin Roofng & Waterproofng was able to work with Henry Company in order to design a waterproofing system that met all the specifcations of the job. Te Henry waterproofng system included a hot fuid-applied waterproofng coating, root barrier, and drainage board to be applied to the entire three-acre (12,141 m²) park deck. Getting Ready With the waterproofng system approved by the Texas Department of Transportation, the 22-man Chamberlin crew was ready to begin JANUARY 2014 COATINGSPROMAG.COM
