In fact, it is said that in times of international crisis, the frst question the president asks is, "W here are the carriers?" Our nation's 10 active carriers support and operate aircraft capable of attacking air, land, and foating targets anywhere in the world. Often, the mere presence of an aircraft carrier is enough to deter potential enemies from acting against U.S. interests. None of this is lost on South Bay Sand Blasting and Tank Cleaning, a San Diego-based company that has carved out a niche as one of the Nav y's go-to frms for the installation of non-skid on fight decks and hangar bays. Hey, imagine life on a pitching, rolling " bird farm" (aka aircraft carrier) without non-skid. Planes couldn't taxi, take of, or land; support vehicles would slide around; and sailors' sea legs would be of little use! South Bay was well plugged into the scene when they frst heard about a proposal to remove and replace approximately 138,000 square feet (12,821 m²) of non-skid aboard the USS Carl Vinson. "We've done tons of work for the Nav y here in San Diego and have installed non-skid on the Carl Vinson many, many times before," said South Bay's Quality Systems Manager Johnny M. Sanchez. "In fact, I' ll wager we've hit that fight deck more than some pilots." Touch and Go South Bay's non-skid coatings specialists frequently work under pressure, but in this case Uncle Sam allowed the crew only 25 days to tackle the entire aft portion of the fight deck and part of the hangar bay below. Te time crunch made this project seem more like a touch-and-go landing than a leisurely trans- oceanic fight. EPOXY Touch and Go! For Aircraft Carrier Non-Skid Project
