38 JULY 2015 COATINGSPROMAG.COM the dome. Te cables formed a circle inside 12 smoke vents that ringed the top of the dome, and they looped around the smoke vents for extra support. Beyond anchoring duties, the cable also formed a safety barrier about 20 feet (6.1 m) from the middle of the dome. Inside the barrier where the roof was relatively fat, the crew could work with no fall protection. Outside the barrier, anyone seen without fall protection would be sent home β€” where they could await their fnal Brazos paycheck. Te crew donned brand-new MSA safety harnesses and fred up NorthStar 5,000 psi (34.5 MPa) gas-powered pressure washers. Tey sprayed the dome top to bottom with a 10 percent solution of Quest United Cleaning Concentrate (UCC). Tey then pressure-washed the dirt away. UCC is biodegradable, so waste water required no special treatment. Trouble on the Summit Before they could lay down the basecoat, the crew had to address some issues inside the safety barrier area. Troubles on the summit included birdbaths (aka substantial low spots) and large bubbles that had formed mainly underneath black lettering that spelled out the dome's sponsor's name. Birdbaths were flled with Quest's Roof Mate ButterGrade Sealant. Te sealant, which gets its name from its buttery consistency, was trowel applied ΒΌ-inch (0.6 cm) maximum thickness per pass as per the technical data sheet. Large bubbles were cut out with Milwaukee reciprocating saws held at an angle to create a bevel. Te cutouts were flled with BASF closed-cell, high-density foam and topped with spray-applied Kymax basecoat. Tat was applied at 8–9 mils (203.2–228.6 microns) DFT in a single pass. Birdbaths and bubbles leveled out, the crew switched to 519 spray-gun tips and started their fve Graco GH 833 gas-powered pumps. Working from bottom to top to avoid dragging safety lines through freshly applied coatings, the men leaned back into their harnesses and sprayed three-foot-high (0.9 m) swaths of coating, traversing the sweeping slab as they worked and moving up before reversing the direction. "Te process is similar to using an Etch A Sketch and trying to blacken out the whole thing," said Keller. "You can do it, but you need a lot of time and have to use deliberate patterns." In addition to leaving the roof when storms cropped up, the crew also wore brand new fall protection at all times and respirators when spraying. Luck didn't come into play on this project. The crew dealt with nearby events, National F o o t b a l l Le a g u e ( N F L ) ga m e s , a n d lightning storms. The roof had lightning rods and teammates warned each other of oncoming storms. Af ter pressure washing the roof, the crew filled any low spots with sealant, cut out any high spots and bubbles and refilled them with foam, and spray-applied ever y thing with a ba secoat from Quest Construction Products.
