76 SEPTEMBER 2015 COATINGSPROMAG.COM Armed with a coating system that could be applied to the concrete substrate of the underground tank, even with tempera- tures dipping into the teens, the four-man Aquablocx crew arrived on the scene ready for action. Tight Spot According to Harnage, the water tank measures 55 feet by 55 feet by 14 feet (16.8 m x 16.8 m x 4.3 m) deep and is considered a confned space because there is limited access through two roof hatches. "We followed confned space entry procedures, which included continuous air monitoring and 3M full-face respirators. Harnesses were used, and the crew was tied of to safety lines. However, there were no gases, and we didn't face physical or mechanical dangers while working in the tank," said Harnage. Te crew also wore 3M protective coveralls for the duration of the job. Given the height of the tank, the Aquablocx team brought in a portable scafolding system. "Te scafolding was assembled inside the tank. It comes apart and travels easily but is a secure and safe scafold system that includes hand rails. It is 6 feet [1.8 m] tall and has wheels. We would have two guys on the scafold while we were spraying the Ecodur 201, and two guys down below moving the scafold as necessary," stated Harnage. In addition to the fact that Ecodur 201 has no VOCs, Harnage pointed out several other benefts to the coating material that directly relate to its use in confned spaces. First, it requires no primer or topcoat, and it can be sprayed directly on both concrete and steel. "Te material adheres just as well to either substrate; there is no need to bring in another material The crew star ted the project by abrasive blasting the entire interior of th e re s er voir.
