Coatings selection is also especially crucial within food and beverage facil- ities, where the coatings will need to adhere to the principles of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) food safety program to be compliant with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. Plan Ahead Plant operators and coatings contrac- tors need to start planning holiday renovations well in advance to avoid disappointment. Planning early will help to ensure that the materials, workforce, and expertise will be avail- able when and where they are needed. Tis will avoid having to cancel the project because of double-booked applicators or because of limited stock availability. After all, working on a holiday may mean that a supplier is operating with a skeleton crew, or he or she could already have committed most of the materials to other seasonal projects. Work ing w ith reputable suppliers and manufacturers that the contrac- tor k nows can be tr usted to prov ide the r ight products and adv ice for a quick industr ia l recoating w i l l help to speed up the process. Look ing for mater ia l and equipment suppliers that have a w ide range of solutions and ex per ience supply ing for simi lar projects may be usef u l. T hat w i l l help the contractor k now that the supply companies are aware of the relevant time, insta l lation, qua lit y of f inish, and longev it y issues that may be encountered dur ing the job. Another practical consideration during a holiday shutdown renovation is that key contacts may be harder to reach. Terefore, make sure during the planning stages that decision makers (and crucially a key holder), such as with the client and supplier, can always be contacted throughout the project. Pros and Cons While a holiday renovation makes the work easier for coatings contractors in some ways, in many others it can be seen as a test of the contractor's capabil- ities. Not only is it important that the application team can complete a project to a high standard within a short period of time, but it's also a test of planning skills, the ability to source the right materials, and the capacity to quickly troubleshoot complicating factors to keep the installation on schedule. Working on a coating job over a holiday might sound like a great idea, but make sure that it is the right idea for you and your crew!
