48 SEPTEMBER 2015 COATINGSPROMAG.COM temperatures and dry times." In addition to that, because the interior portion of the project was considered a potentially explosive environment, the John W. Egan Co. crew had to wait for a representative from the client to come in each morning to ensure there were no leaks via a gas monitor. As Belisle succinctly explained it, "Tey'd come in, snif around, make sure there were no leaks, sign our work permits for the day, and we'd be of to the races." "[It's a] very safety-conscious company and facility to work for in general," Belisle said. Te crew also had to have background checks, badges, and tailored safety briefngs. Because they'd already worked in the facility before, the only unique item was the safety briefng tailored to this particular project. Te crew had its own site-specifc safety plan and safety practices, too. Tey used one guy outside the containment during the blasting portion to ensure that it stayed contained, one guy on the inside at the trigger, and the third guy setting up or breaking down the next containment to keep it moving. Coat of Arms With all pipes prepped, the crew was able to move onto the meat of the system: the protective and insulative coating system. On the pipes inside, where the insulative coatings were helping to control condensation, the crew spray-applied three separate coats of Tnemec's Series 971 Aerolon coating. Each coat was applied at an approximate thickness of 50 mils (1,270.0 microns) DFT using a pneumatic hopper gun. According to Woessner, Aerolon is the frst ever Aerogel- flled insulative coating. And according to Belisle, the Aerolon material was "pretty difcult to apply due to the layout of the equipment, limited square footage, and the fact that you can't apply with an airless [spray gun]." Instead of an airless sprayer, they used Wallboard Tools' Texture Pro 200 with a 2-gallon (7.6 L) gravity-fed hopper on the top. Tat helped them to navigate around all of the diferent pipes. A lso, because the Aerolon isn't a high-solids, catalyzed product, spraying too much in a single coat was a concern. Teir solution: "Slow and steady. Find the right spot to spray," Belisle said. Tey also checked thicknesses with a wet flm gage. Te insulative coatings were topped with Wearing half-face respirators with organic car tridges, they spray- applied the insulative coating in one or three 50-mil (1,270.0 microns) lifts depending on the system. Then the topcoat was brush- and roller- applied at 2–3 mils (50.8–76.2 microns) DFT. The crew brush- and roller-applied the primer at 4–6 mils (101.6–152.4 microns) dry film thickness (DFT). They wore standard gear, including safety glasses, hard hats, work boots, long pants, and ear plugs.
