roof coating is easy to apply, and it's not water-soluble so if it rains shortly after application, it won't wash of," explained Johnson. "It dries quickly on a sunny day, so we can get back to applying new coats in an hour. It doesn't break down to rain or sun either." A Juggling Act T he quick-dr y ing silicone gained the team some much-needed time. Because Blaisdell is an active arena, the crew had to adjust its work schedule based on the event schedule and any planned concerts. T he client didn't want the project to inter- fere w ith any scheduled shows. A nd since the primer couldn't be exposed for more than 72 hours, the timing had to be coordinated w ith the weather in addition to shows to prevent a lag between priming and coating. "Tough many people think Hawaii always has perfect weather, this is not the case, especially for construction and especially when dealing with coating externally," said Randall Belmonte, PIC's operations manager. "High winds, high heat, and rain frequently required active schedule management to keep the project moving steadily." Because of all the moving pieces that needed coordination, the project took a little less than three months to complete. " T here were probably full weeks of time that we couldn't work between the arena's schedule and the weather condi- tions," explained Johnson. " We couldn't work on a roof that steep in the rain because it was too slipper y. If it rained all night the night before or even if it was raining intermit- tently during the day, we had to wait for things to dr y before attempting to get on the roof." All's Well That Ends Well Despite all the challenges — working outside 75 feet (22.9 m) up in the air on a roof for a busy entertainment venue — the project was a resounding success. Te team managed to fnish the project by the scheduled completion date and they were even under budget. W hat's more, the team exemplifed the importance of hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Te project was concluded without a hitch, including the fact that they never had to use the retrieval system they had diligently trained to use in case of a true emergency. "I am very confdent in this team," concluded Johnson. "Randall Belmonte, Pacifc's operations manager, and Chad Dickenson, the project supervisor, led this crew very efectively. Tey collaborated to put together a solid plan that made this all happen under budget, on time, and with every crew member remaining safe and sound. Everyone involved should be proud of their eforts." As a result of the hard work and substantial planning of Pacifc Industrial Coatings, the roof of the iconic Blaisdell Arena is now transformed, no longer an eye sore for the citizens and visitors of Honolulu, and leak-free. Te king himself would surely say, "Tank ya. Tank ya very much."
