38 MARCH 2016 COATINGSPROMAG.COM If the coating isn't impact-resistant and it cracks, chemicals can get in the cracks and cause even more problems for the coating system and the steel it is protecting. Ecodur remains fexible; it won't crack and will stand up to even the harshest chemicals," said Harnage. But frst, the chief engineer wanted personal proof that the Ecodur coating could stand up to the harshest of conditions. Harnage and the Aquablocx crew were tasked with coating fve-foot by fve-foot (1.5 m x 1.5 m) steel plates, both bare and primed, on the dock adjacent to the ship. Te plates were used and abused for approximately three months. According to Harnage, the plates were driven over, walked on, had equip- ment dragged over them, and were intentionally subjected to abrasions and impacts that are common in the back fantail and interior equipment spaces. "After about three months, the chief engineer really liked what he saw as far as the durability of the Ecodur coating. We were asked to do a small area aboard the ship and were eventu- ally asked to coat many areas of the ship, including the back fantail and interior equipment spaces. We were there for about four months total and applied Ecodur to approximately 20,000 square feet [1,858.1 m²] of the ship," said Harnage. In Stages As with many areas on the ship, the back fantail and interior equipment spaces were prepped and coated in stages. Te frst stage was when the ship was frst being built and no equipment had been installed yet. A lthough the steel was new, some areas had fash rust that the crew needed to remove prior to applying After completing a test on the dock to gain approval from the owner, which wishes to remain unnamed, the crew started in on the prep. That included using DeWalt angle grinders, hand tools, and scrapers.
