COATINGSPRO SEPTEMBER 2016 65 said. "Painters received a change order to repair and repaint this area. e leak was routed out and allowed to drain. It was repaired with a cementitious crystalline waterproofing and then repainted with primer and topcoat." T he crew used Xy pex Concentrate and Xy pex Patch 'n Plug to fi x that problem. T hey followed that by using the Tnemec Series primer and topcoat in the same way as in the rest of the pool. A nother area was causing a jump. "Caulk that filled the joint where the concrete wall of the pool met the stainless steel trough at the top also was found to have deteriorated and rotted. So after assessment of its condition, Vulcan Painters received a change order to dig out and replace caulk around the entire instructional pool," Pigue said. "Both the steel and concrete had to be primed w ith separate primers before the caulk was applied." For the area receiving the caulking repair, crew members from Vulcan Painters used Sikaflex Primer 260 on the stainless steel trough, Sikaflex Primer 429 on the concrete shell, and Sikaflex-1a, a polyurethane, elastomeric sealant on the transi- tion joint between the trough and the pool shell. Project Anchor Because the coating situation that the crew came into from the onset was soft and bubbling, Vulcan Painters established a hold point to ensure the coating system had cured before refilling the pool. ey also performed quality control measures, includ- ing testing substrate moisture and chloride residue and using coating cure parameters. e crew worked efficiently and carefully on the job, which was good because they were under a time crunch, Pigue said. e pool was part of Auburn University, which meant swim team practice and other events had to be put on hold or held elsewhere during the renovation. "e competition pool was completed during the summer, but painters had to be out as quickly as possible so that swim practice could resume," Pigue said. "e instructional pool was blasted and painted during the fall semester, and it had to be completely contained during blasting to keep blast media and dust from the public." But the crew got the job done, and they made sure it was done to last. "It was an exciting project, and we got a lot of compli- ments on it," Pigue said. He and the crew were satisfied w ith a job well done — even if it was done for their bitter football rivals.
