The Blastco crew used Graco Xtremes to spray-apply a 2- to 3-mil (50.8 microns to 76.2 microns) DFT layer of Carbozinc 11 solvent- based inorganic zinc primer onto the tank's walls and roof. (76.2 microns) anchor profile in preparation of three coats of Carboline Carboguard 891, a cycloaliphatic amine epoxy. Blastco general manager Jay Soper first checked out the tank at a pre-bid meeting and walk-through. While this get-together was reasonably well- attended, not all are. "Job walks and pre-bid meetings aren't usually mandatory, but truth be told, they make us a lot more competitive, " says Soper, who has participated in numerous such affairs since joining Blastco in 1998. "They give us a feel for job site access, potential hurdles and pitfalls, and generally help keep us from overbidding or underbidding a project. I went to one pre-bid meeting the other day and was the only bidder to show up. Incredible!" In this case, the job walk showed Soper a way to shave considerable time off the project. The job site presented no obstacles in bringing trucks and machinery close to the tank, but access to the interior of the 25' tall (7.62m) by 188'-diameter (57.30m) tank was limited.
