VENDOR TEAM ARS Abrasive blast/recycling equipment 4000 McCartney Road Lowellville, OH 44436 (330) 536-8210 www.arsrecycling.com Using Graco Xtremes, the crew spray-applied an intermediate coat of Carboline's Carboguard 893 in a 4- to 6-mil (101.6 microns to 152.4 microns) DFT thickness in a single pass. ABOVE 6-mil (101.6 microns to 152.4 microns) DFT coating of 893 in a single pass. Although 893 may be applied at 3 mils (76.2 microns) over inorganic zinc primers in mild environments, this tank's specs called for 4 to 6 mils (101.6 microns to 152.4 microns) to help battle blazing Texas sunshine. The crew then prepared kits of Carbothane 134 HG (4:1 ratio, A to B) by mixing separately, combining, and power mixing. Sticking with the #417 tips, the Blastco crew raced to apply a single 2- to 3-mil (50.8 microns to 76.2 microns) DFT coating of 134 HG to create a high gloss finish to cap off the water tank's exterior coating system. With no time to spare, the tank passed inspection, and Houston Public Works reopened the supply valves. HIGH WATER MARK It took only one day for massive pumps to fill the five-million- gallon (18,927,058.9L) tank to the high water mark. Soper looks BLACKSTONE WELDING AND FABRICATION INC. "We have a great relationship with the city of Houston and with Carboline," Soper says. "This three-coat system always goes on really well, and I'm absolutely positive the customer got a great product. The biggest pressure was to get the project done on time because the city wanted that tank back online because of the drought." ABOVE With the tank coated, it took only one day for massive pumps to fill the five-million-gallon (18,927,058.9L) tank to the high water mark. 60 CoatingsPro J July 2012 With the tank returned to service, the City of Houston Public Works and Engineering Department was able to continue pumping 400 million gallons (1,514,164,713.6L) of water per day to keep Houston spigots from running dry, resulting in a whole bunch of parched cowpokes. As everybody knows, you don't mess with Texas' water supply. CP
