COATINGSPRO JANUARY 2017 75 specs called for installation of the silicone coating system directly onto the existing roof, repaired areas needed primer to avoid tobacco juicing (also called tea staining). " W hen you apply a silicone coating system over new cap sheet, oils from asphalt migrate up through the silicone to for m brow n stains that look like tobacco juice or tea stains," said T hompson. " T he stains are cosmetic only, but if your client pays for a white roof you want to deliver a white roof, so you apply pr imer to trap the asphalt oils. If you don't pr ime, brow n stains w ill migrate through, no matter how many coats you apply." A lthough the crew d idn't mi x the butter-g rade sea ler, they had to f ire up their power mi xer for the t wo -compo - nent PGE966 pr imer. T he crew members thoroughly mi xed Par ts A (white) and Par ts B (dark g ray) separately. T hey then combined equa l par ts A and B unti l the combined pr imer tur ned unifor m light g ray. Work ing w ith a pot life of approx- imately t wo hours, they used 9 -inch (22.9 cm) rol lers w ith ¼-inch (0.6 cm) nap covers a long w ith br ushes to suppress tobacco juicing and tea staining. e crew let the primer cure and turned their attention to the star of the show: the white silicone roof coating. Pro-Grade Elite 988HS is a single-component, moisture-cured silicone designed for use on asphaltic BUR and other common roofing systems. After thoroughly blending with a 3-inch-diameter (7.6 cm) mixing blade, the crew slipped ¾-inch (1.9 cm) nap covers over their 9-inch (22.9 cm) rollers and worked directly from the 5-gallon (18.9 L) buckets. To achieve a uniform total average thickness of 28 mils (711.2 microns) DFT, the applicators periodically checked progress with a wet film thickness (WFT) gage, observed the minimum recoat window of two to eight hours and maximum recoat window of 48 hours, and applied the second coat perpendicular to the first. On Cloud Nine Soon after the second and final coat of Elite 988HS cured, ompson and FQR owners Amador and Duarte toured the roof with Bella Mare Condominiums property managers. Bella Mare property manager Jennifer Jordan was on cloud nine. "FQR took the necessary steps to ensure the success of this project," Jordan said. "anks to them, we have been able to complete this project without going over budget and on time. I would highly recommend FQR to any business or condominium." Amador is extremely proud of Gonzalez and this crew. "You can market and sell just about anything, but if you don't have a solid crew to create what you've promised on paper, you have nothing," she said. "Most of our guys have been with us more than five years. ey're experts who get the job done right the first time so we don't have to go back." ompson summed it up nicely: "I never worry about FQR's workmanship," he said. "ey not only represent themselves, but at the end of the day, they represent Henry, too." Despite working 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays only, steering clear of noisy activities above occupied penthouse suites, coping with bottlenecks at the elevator and stairs, and moving carpet runners twice daily, the crew finished on time, under budget, and came away with another happy client. And with hundreds of high rises on the eastern coast of Florida, the sky's the limit for this high flying FQR crew! CP Roof Recoat Finally, the crew could apply the topcoat. Again using rollers, they applied two coats of Henr y's Pro-Grade Elite 988HS white silicone roof coating at ~28 mils (711.2 microns) DFT. With that, they left the building!
