Summer School: Rescuing a Rooftop in Hong Kong W hen applying a coating system, contractors strive for the optimum application conditions. As many contractors know, though, achieving these circumstances is sometimes near impossi- ble, especially when working on an outdoor jobsite. W hen HKP Engineering (Materials) Limited was asked to rehabilitate the roof of the Christian & Missionary A lliance Sun Kei Primary School (Ping Shek), located in Hong Kong, they jumped at the opportunity. But when they learned that the project would take place during the extremely hot and humid summer months, they knew that the job would face some unique challenges. For this crew, summer school meant applying a full coating system and overcoming the less-than-optimum condi- tions to successfully rehabilitate the roof of the school building. Homework Time HKP has 15 employees and more than 30 years of local and overseas experience, providing technical support and compre- hensive construction services to its clients. "e crew of HKP is very professional. Many of the crew members have more than 20 years of experience in the waterproofing field. ey take the quality of their work very seriously. HKP started spraying polyurea coating in 2013 when I began to train them and assist them in installing this material. ey are now experts with polyurea," said Jeff Yang of Pentens, the manufacturer of the coating system chosen for this project. With this expertise, the HKP team was certain that, despite what they expected with regard to the weather, they would be able to handle whatever Mother Nature brought their way. According to Andy Wong of HKP, the Christian Missionary A lliance Sun Kei Primary School was built in 1969, so the roof deck had had a great deal of wear and tear. A solution was needed that would rehabilitate the roof without a complete tear-off.
