COATINGSPRO MARCH 2017 65 Erazo, " basically, we just follow the line w ith the roller." T he markings are made using A merican Safety MS-200 W hite. " You gotta use a lot of precision; we have a handful of guys who can do that," he said. en, time for the Coast Guard to sign off on the A ll-Star crew's work. Yep, you guessed it: another hold point. Once the VLA markings and dry film thickness of the water way topcoat were approved, the crew just had to wait for everything to cure before calling it a day. On a top deck project, that meant leaving the containment up for a few days. According to Erazo, taking the containment dow n too soon would risk a coating that would "chalk up." Erazo believes that occurs because of ambient temperature changes. "It turns a little whitish," he explained. T herefore, they leave the containment — made of metal frames and heat-shrunk plastic — for a few days after the application process is completed. Erazo didn't worr y about leaving the containment up w ithout having eyes on it. " We've had situations where containments have been in 30 - to 40 -mile-per-hour [48.3‒64.4 km/ h.] w ind, and the w ind doesn't take it dow n because of how we construct it," he said. Mission Complete Sans one small snafu concerning water leakage from another crew working on board, the A ll-Star team completed the project to spec. It took nine days to finish the top deck landing area. After having the system accepted by the Coast Guard inspector, it was wheels up for A ll-Star Cleaning & Preservation. Service orders complete. CP For contractors working on militar y projects, there may be a sense of pride when done. The USCGC Midgett project was not without challenges, but the All-Star crew succeeded in bringing it back to tip-top shape.
