Topics include how to achieve the OSHA Issues New Rule to Lower Beryllium Levels A new rule issued by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSH A) dramatically lowers workplace permissible exposure limits (PELs) to ber yllium, a material that can cause lung diseases. T he new standards for general industr y, construction, and shipyards w ill require employers to take additional, practical measures to protect an estimated 62,000 workers. T he final rule w ill reduce the eight- hour PEL from the previous level of 2.0 μg /m 3 to 0.2 μg /m 3 . Above that level, employers must take steps to reduce the airborne concentration. T he rule requires additional protec- tions, including personal protective equipment, medical exams, other medical sur veillance, and training. It also establishes a short-term exposure limit of 2.0 μg /m 3 over a 15-minute sampling period. Harris to the role of international marketing coordinator.
