"We had to build cradles to spread out the loads under our heav y gear," said Ofsharick. "e owners were worried about the platform's ability to handle that much weight. We also tied down our equipment so that if heav y winds or waves came up, things wouldn't get knocked off the platform." With the project finally staged, the A lpine crew was ready to take the plunge! Way Too Salty With the desalinization unit ready to feed their 1,000-gallon (3,785.4 L) tank, the crew rigged up their NLB 225 Series Ultra High Pressure (UHP) water unit with a five-jet offset head and prepared to prep the top deck. Attacking the top deck first would allow Island International time to erect a QuikDeck scaffold system by Safway beneath the platform and install a pipeline pig launcher topside. T he A lpine crew installed a fitting between the desali- nization unit and tank to add CHLOR*R ID soluble salt The five-person crew had to rid the corroded steel of loose paint and soluble salts before they could recoat. The goal was to achieve NACE WJ-4/Societ y for Protective Coating s (SSPC) Sur face Preparation (SP) WJ-4 for waterjetting. To prep, the crew used ultra-high pressure waterjetting. Safety was of the utmost importance on this project. They wore TurtleSkin blast gaiters and gloves while operating the UHP waterjetting rig.
