Regardless of what we're talking about, what something (or someone) looks like makes an impression on the person looking. A lthough you probably shouldn't judge a book by its cover, you can and probably will. But I think it's how you interpret that appearance — what that appearance means — that matters the most. With a book 's cover, worn around the edges may mean old and used to some (negative), but to me that means read often (positive). In the coatings world, appearances can also be used to help identify issues. Many times, a roof leak, corroding steel, or spalling concrete may first be noticed visually. Paying attention to looks can help early detection of these types of problems. Issue Highlights e exterior of this issue should lead you to finding a few appearance-related articles within. e article titled "Summer School: Rescuing a Rooftop in Hong Kong" highlights a rooftop project where the look featured the color purple. A purple rooftop isn't the norm, but it was picked to fit in with the colorful design of the building and the rainbow theme of a nearby subway station. Read about the colorful installation details on page 54. In another feature article in this issue, "Waterfront NASA Hotel Blasts Off With New Exterior," appearances mattered to the facility owners. Applying a liquid waterproofing to the exterior of the Houston hotel also gave it a facelift. No one wants to stay in a hotel that doesn't look nice, after all! Turn to page 38 to read that article. It's not just the features that are sharing the importance of appearances. How about how potential customers and other facility owners view contrac- tors? ose kinds of appearances matter, too. In this issue's Notes From the Field (page 28), you might get a few tips on how to educate the owner and, therefore, help improve the view of the industry. Another version of appearances may be seen on your crew's time cards. Can the crew members become more efficient and increase your bottom line? Flip to page 22 for this issue's Money Matters to see. Appearing in Print Some of the staff members at CoatingsPro, along with many of our readers and advertisers, were in Las Vegas for the World of Concrete again this year in January. Talk about a place that seems to care about appearances! Bright lights, big feathers, tall build- ings. We're headed to New Orleans this month for NACE's CORROSION show. Be sure to stop by, check out our booth, and share in the excitement of CoatingsPro's inaugural Contractor Award Program's award winners. We hope you enjoy the looks of this and every one of the issues of CoatingsPro. CP
