efflorescence is actually the precursor of baking soda: sodium carbonate decahydrate (Na2CO¬3 ¬ 10H2O) . When the acid etcher is applied, any efflorescence on the floor is converted instantly to a saltwater solution and carbon dioxide – evidenced by the presence of foam. After physically scrubbing the product into the concrete as per the product's instruction, the remaining acid must be neutralized, typically with a trisodium phosphate (TSP) solution, followed by vigorous rinsing. It is therefore wise to acid etch only in areas where rinse water can safely drain. It is paramount to dry the surface sufficiently after the etch process. Fans and dehumidifiers help dry the surface faster. Chemistry-savvy companies have learned to do the same process with less acidic compounds such as buffered organic acids, emulsifiers, and detergents; but the technique is still the same. Grinding: two's a Crowd – Get the existing Coating off Applying a new coating to an existing coated surface makes as much sense as pouring fresh coffee into a cup that still has some of yesterday's brew. It saves time cleaning the cup, but the coffee doesn't taste as good. Likewise, applying a new coating over an existing coating can be done but risks include: • Delamination of the topcoat because the old surface was not prepared properly • Improper wet out of the new topcoat because of unforeseen surface imperfections on the old coating – in other words, the new coating may stick well, but will look bad • Delamination of the entire system because the concrete substrate was not properly prepared or because of unseen concrete issues occurring beneath the old coating Removing the existing coating to properly prepare the concrete for the new flooring system is a long-term gain for the customer. Keep in mind that once the new coating is applied to an existing coated surface, all liability for system performance is shifted, at least in the customer's eyes, to new coating primer is able to adhere only to the concrete and will not be interfered with by unknowns in the existing coating or any impurities that existed on the old surface. the new system provider. Why shoulder that risk for the sake of an old coating? To remove existing coatings without harming too much of the concrete surface, diamond grinding machines can be used. Again, this assumes the concrete is sound to begin with. Grinders remove a very thin layer of concrete by the simple act of abrasion. When the clean concrete is exposed the shot Blasting: Now things Are Getting rough Shot blasting is a very efficient preparation method that mechanically propels steel shot onto the surface to remove exist- GMA GARNET GROUP when your abrasive matters! Abrasive Cost or Abrasive Value? What really matters? In your abrasive blasting project, what really matters is the cost per sq/ft of blasted surface not the cost per ton of abrasive! Great savings can be achieved by selecting a high performance abrasive, that uses less abrasive and does the job faster - covering more sq/ft in less time! High performance garnet GMA Garnet™ cleans the surface at twice the speed of slag and uses less than half the quantity of abrasive. At the same time, you get superior surface Ànish while operating in a health & environmentally safe condition. ,MgLer'ost TersUJt &DOO; XV WRGD\ to Ànd out how much you can save with GMA GarnetTM including recycling options to help you save even more!
