"I brought senators, media, and other stakeholders to see the ship while it was there. I wanted to show the people who had worked so hard to raise the funds what the money was being used for. Not many people get to walk underneath a Nav y ship." e crew obliged this, despite their work and the tight time frame. T he under water coatings included one full coat of Intergard 269 red epox y, applied at an average of 2 mils (50.8 microns) dr y film thickness (DFT) to the bare metal; one full coat of Intershield 300V Bronze epox y, applied at an average of 8 mils (203.2 microns) DFT; and one full topcoat of Intershield 300V A luminum epox y, applied at an average of 8 mils (203.2 microns) DFT. T he boottop coatings, about 2,000 square feet (185.8 m²) of the hull sur face area, included these same three coatings and applications, plus one full topcoat of Interthane 990 black poly urethane, applied at an average of 2 mils (50.8 microns) DFT. T he freeboard coatings, which covered 6,300 square feet (585.3 m²), included one spot coat of Intergard 264 red epox y, applied at an average of 5 mils (127.0 microns) DFT to bare metal surfaces; one spot coat of Intergard 264 gray epox y, applied at an average of 5 mils (127.0 microns) DFT; one spot coat of Interlac 2V haze gray, applied at about 1 mil (25.4 microns) DFT; and one full coat of Interlac 2V haze gray finish, applied at an average of 2 mils (50.8 microns) DFT to ow ner-designated freeboard surfaces. e …nal coat of paint on most vessels is an anti-fouling coating, which lasts much less than 16 years and is unrespon- sive to marine growth after four or …ve years. e crew omitted this coating for the Turner Joy since it would be costlier and has no real long-term bene…t to a vessel that won't be dry docked again for more than 15 years. "e crew worked hard to ensure the Turner Joy left the dry dock in its best condition," said Stebbins. "We even re‚oated the ship and then blasted it again to make sure we covered all the spots." e crew had to stop occasionally due to weather — periodic rain or subfreezing temperatures. e team monitored the temperature, humidity, and dew point to ensure the condi- tions were suitable for coating application. In fact, the second shift found it next to impossible to apply coatings at night due to the drop in temperature at that time of year. Ship Shape Despite all these limitations, Lake Union and the team were able to …nish the project in just three and a half weeks. "e vessel looks better today than when it was new," said Hanson. "Everything just pops and looks great! Hobie ensured everything went smoothly. Lake Union and all of the partners involved really went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect." T he USS Tur ner Joy is back, teaching about its mar itime histor y as wel l as science technolog y — a simu ltaneous relic of our countr y's histor y and a tool for our f uture. CP The underwater coatings included International Paint's Intergard 269 and two layers of Intershield 300V in bronze and aluminum. On the boottop, they used the same system plus a topcoat of Interthane 990. To the freeboard, the crew used a full and spot coat of Intergard 264 and a spot and full coat of Interlac 2V.
