"We're aware of each other; we actually compete against each other regularly. ey just don't do spray foam work, so they reached out to us to do that work, and we did." In fact, there are very few companies in Hawaii that do spray foam work. at reason was partially why Johnson started Pacific Industrial Coatings, LLC. Johnson has more than 25 years of industry experience in manufacturing, operations, logistics, research and development, quality control, techni- cal services, and sales management with industry leaders in roofing, waterproofing, insulation, and protective coatings. Johnson used to work as a vice president and general manager for 10 years at a coating and SPF manufacturer, and while doing that work, he saw an opportunity in Hawaii. "I used to work with the manufacturer Gaco Western, and on various trips here to Hawaii, I saw a need for this type of roofing," he said. "I saw that a very small amount of people were doing it. It was kind of a niche market for Hawaii." Pacific Industrial Coatings, LLC is a Honolulu, Hawaii- based company that specializes in closed-cell spray-applied polyurethane foam and silicone roof systems that withstand the high demands of the pacific region with superior hurricane, insulation, and weather performance. Despite the number of spray foam coating contractors that are now in the Hawaii region, Johnson's background made him and his Pacific Industrial Coatings (PIC) team perfectly suited to tackle this job at the Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Access and Control e task before the PIC crew was daunting: Tear down the exist- ing polyurethane foam roof system, and replace it with a new coated polyurethane foam roof system. One of the biggest challenges was the shape of the roof — not the condition it was in — though that was also bad. e building had a barrel roof with tight arches pushed up against each other. "ese are domed structures, and so it's not easy to stand on," Johnson said. "Once you got down to the base of it, it was a very small working area, and the concrete was not in the best shape." ese domed structures made it difficult to install fall protection safety equipment, access parts of the roof, walk around the substrate, and use heav y equipment. To overcome the first difficulty, the crew installed anchor points for fall protection every two domes. "e first thing to do was set up safety equipment, which also wasn't straightfor- ward because we're talking about curved roofs, so we had to be creative with fall protection," Johnson said. "Each end had a curved roof, and then on one end, the curved roof was open. We had to tie off right along this opening and create a wooden structure on one end so that it was safe for fall protection." "e crew was tied off for fall protection 100 percent of the time," Johnson added. "We also set up guardrails, rope grabs, and delineators for the walk path." To deal with the issue of a lack of access, the crew worked slowly, taking on one section of the roof at a time. "It was…very difficult to walk on, but the guys did a good job with it," Johnson said. "We couldn't get a lot of production done every day because The rain meant having to be careful about the amount attacked each day. "We didn't take on a bigger chunk than we thought could get waterproofed in one day," said Bob Johnson, president of PIC. Surface prep included removal of the old SPF, also called spray foam. They had to use hand tools for this step because the shape of the roof wouldn't allow for big equipment. Despite the barrel-shaped roof, the crew still used delineators for a walk path and wore fall protection. Safety also included wearing respirators when installing the spray foam. Pearl Harbor SPF
