54 MAY 2015 COATINGSPROMAG.COM about it running. Taylor did the entire tank in one day, but it was a full day!" Te next morning, Prontaut brought the food processing company supervisor over and showed him the tank. He reviewed the process step-by-step, explaining the importance of proper surface prep, skillful spraying, and abiding by specifcations, such as observing ambient temperatures and recoat windows. "Tis wastewater tank had been a nightmare for years and [the supervisor] breathed a huge sigh of relief," said Prontaut. "After I explained everything, he just said, 'I only have one question. W hen can I fll it up?' I told him just wait 24 hours, and you can bring it back on line." No Cakewalk! W hile on site during this project, CMT also breathed new life onto the tank exterior. T hey hit the walls w ith a Mi-T-M pressure washer set at 5,000 psi (35 MPa) to remove surface contaminants. Power tools brought rusty welds to SSPC-SP-3. T he crew spot-primed the welds by brushing and rolling 4 – 6 mils (102–152 microns) DFT of Sher w in- Williams M ACROPOX Y 646 in a single pass. T hey brushed and rolled those areas w ith a single coat of COROTH A NE 1 aliphatic finish coat at 3–5 mils (76 –127 microns) DFT. T hey used dr y wall-ty pe pole sanders to abrade the tank 's existing urethane coating w ith 100 -grit sandpaper. Finally, they brushed and rolled the entire tank w ith a single coat of COROTH A NE 1 aliphatic finish topcoat at 3–5 mils (76 –127 microns) DFT. CMT is not only proud of the finished product, they're proud of the way they conducted themselves on the jobsite. Before cofounding CMT, Wendy Banks played a little hooky from the coatings world. She spent more than a decade in the hospitality industr y working for Hyatt Hotels, Walt Disney Attractions, and Universal Orlando. To her, customer ser vice is ever ything. T hat includes how her crew engages clients. "We're not slop jockeys!" Banks said. "We clean up the jobsite at the end of every single day. We don't borrow clients' equipment. We show up on time. We photo document the entire process, and our clients don't pay until they're one hundred percent satisfed. After an invoice is paid, we send clients a customer satisfaction survey. Our goal is to engineer out every- thing clients hate about contractors." CMT had a lot to overcome on this project. T he crew lost valuable hours the first day dealing w ith grit in the bottom of the tank. T hey lost two days to a passing storm. A cold snap that ensued forced them to change primers and alter the appli- cation process to avoid missing a tightened recoat w indow. CMT 's ace SHER FLEX applicator tack led the entire interior in one day. A nd just to sweeten the pot a bit, the crew treated the tank exterior to a fresh coat of paint. In the end, the ow ner was so happy he awarded them another tank job. Sure, this wastewater tank fx was tough, but nobody ever said it would be a cakewalk! CP "This wa s tewater tank had b een a nightmare for year s and [the supervisor] breathed a huge sigh of relief," said CMT's Lloyd Prontaut. The client waited 24 hours, and then the tank was back in business!
