To stay w ithin the manufac- turer's specs, they needed to wait approx imately 24 hours before ex posing the urethane to foot traf f ic. To that end, they relied on bar r icades and yel low tape. Ver r y remembers when he f irst lear ned that a patron had crossed a bar r ier and wa l ked on a sti l l-wet f loor. He muttered "craps!" — or something simi lar. "Our biggest single issue was keeping patrons off our new f loors," Verr y said. " This happened three different times. They 'd walk in, typically tr ying to get to a restroom, see they were walking in goo, turn around and walk back onto the carpet, and get epoxy on that. We had to redo the sections: mask off the area, grind back beneath the compromised level, and build up again. It was frustrating. The casino has a great security system [as Verr y well knows] that identified two of the three people. One guy was banned from the casino for a while; he purposely jumped the barrier. The other was a little old lady who absentmindedly walked out onto the f loor. They told her not to do it again." Stacked Deck To overcome the tr io of setbacks, the Desco crew buck led dow n and u ltimately w rapped up before Ind iana Grand R acing & Casino's Kentuck y Derby par t y. A lthough at times the crew felt like they were play ing against a stacked deck, meeting the dead line and hear ing accolades f rom casino managers made it a l l wor thwhi le. "I'm extremely proud of this project," said Dobbs. "Our team worked great. I wouldn't trade these guys for anything!" Reasor believes the mechanics of the new fooring system will keep cracks from showing up for years to come — if they ever show at all! W hile Desco takes pride in all they do, the entire company appreciates the importance of this project, the efort it took to fnish in a timely manner, and the high-profle nature of this particular foor. "Tis is a fagship job," said Verry. " Tens of thousands of people come into the casino, and the frst thing they see is our foor. Tey don't know who did it, but we know. Tere's pride throughout the company. Te casino is happy, and our crew is happy. We even hung job pictures in the hallway at our warehouse." Hey! W hat could be better than helping a casino beat the odds on a big gamble? CP Before the crew dip- and roll-applied the topcoat, they needed to create the look of clouds using denatured alcohol. They spritzed the alcohol into the still-wet top layer of 511 to get the desired look. Desco is proud of this job.
