COATINGSPRO SEPTEMBER 2015 71 Tose time constraints brought another challenge. "Whenever you're dealing with a job that's 28,000 feet [8.5 km], you have to get product shipped in, so when you have a three- week schedule, you have to bump it out," Brenchley said. "I know the demo crew also ran a week behind schedule because when they were shot blasting, so much of that surface had to come up." He added, "Most parking garages are kind of the easiest things we do, and this became the biggest problem we've had to deal with." In addition to the garage, Brenchley's crew had 500 pedes- trian decks to recoat. "All the concrete decks were on a PT [post-tensioned] slab that was level, so we had about two-thirds of those coatings just peeling right of the concrete," he said. "We had to go in and grind out all of that coating and re-slope the substrate. With that, we used a product called Sika 2500 fast cure mortar. It's one of the few products that allow us to coat over it with the urethane coating within 48 hours. All the other concrete patch systems and sloping materials, you have to wait a minimum of 15 days, oftentimes 21 days, for the concrete to cure." Once re-sloped, the pedestrian decks were covered with the Polycoat 150 system for a total average thickness of 55 mils (1,397.0 microns). Te courtyards, which had their own process, were coated with the Polycoat Aquaseal 5000 system at an average thickness of 60 mils (1,524.0 microns). Stick-to-It-iveness As if the concrete challenges that had popped up weren't enough, complicating things further was the fact that people were living in the condo complex while the crew was working. "With the decks, we basically pinned their doors shut because we're removing the safety rail to do all the siding work," Brenchley said. "Tat's always a bit of a struggle, especially in the summer when things don't smell very good. None of our coatings smell good." In the garage, Brenchley was surprised that tenants did not walk through their work. "Tey have had a lot of complaints with people wanting to park their cars there, but a lot of the parking garage jobs we do, we end up with footprints because tenants will walk through," he said. "Tis one, they really haven't walked through it; I'm actually quite surprised with that." A l l of the improv isations in the coatings system and the hard work of the Tr init y Water proof ing crew paid of f in the end and made Brenchley glad he stuck w ith the job. "It looks g reat," he said. "It 's like apples and bananas. It 's completely d if ferent." CP` The project, which lasted four weeks long in total, ended up changing the look (and protection) of the garage in particular. "It looks great," Brenchley said. "It's like apples and bananas. It's completely different." Footprints in still-wet coatings is a frequent problem in parking garages, but luckily not on this job. "This one, they really haven't walked through it," said Brenchley. "I'm actually quite surprised with that."
