28 MAY 2016 COATINGSPROMAG.COM Contractor's Corner W ho gives back to local governments? Tis is a common reaction when I explain that every year our coatings company selects a deserving rural community in North Carolina and donates a municipal water or wastewater infrastructure rehabilitation project at no cost. It is unusual, but the story of our company and its commitment to give back shows how coatings companies can make a diference in their communities. Tis is our blueprint for giving back in the coatings industry. Coatings: More Than Surface Prep and Application In 2003, my brother David Van Zee and I founded Carolina Management Team (CMT), a North Carolina-based industrial coatings company. We found our niche primarily serving our state's municipal water and wastewater infra- structure, and our eyes were opened to the many challenges facing local munic- ipalities with infrastructure aging beyond its useful life. In fact, the need for water and wastewater infrastructure rehabilita- tion in our nation is staggering. Te American Water Works Association (AW WA) estimates that the cost to upgrade U.S. water and wastewater infrastructure is $1 trillion over the next 25 years. In addition, the 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Report Card gives American water and wastewater infrastructure a grade of D. In North Carolina, the ASCE estimates that over the next 20 years, an investment of $10 billion is needed to upgrade water infrastructure and $6.6 billion to upgrade wastewa- ter infrastructure. As we grew our company and became involved in non-proft organi- zations dedicated to safe water and protecting the environment, it became clear that our business had a more important role than just providing surface prep and coating application. CMT helps deliver safe water to commu- nities. Understanding this deeper meaning behind our work not only gave us a greater sense of mission and identity, it was also the frst step of fnding our way to give back. Find the Unsung Heroes Te vast majority of Americans take for granted that the water coming from their faucet is clean and safe. As the recent water crisis in Flint, Mich., has shown, marginalized and neglected water infrastructure can have dire consequences for communities. In North Carolina, the challenges As we grew our company and became involved in non-profit organizations dedicated to safe water and protecting the environment, it became clear that our business had a more important role than just providing surface prep and coating application.
