Tis is desirable in LEED projects and for building owners who want to avoid litigation due to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). LEED NC v4 will address the thermal comfort of occupants in its EQ Credit 5, Termal Comfort. Te relevant standard is ASHR AE 55-2010, Termal Comfort Conditions for Human Occupancy, with errata or local equiva- lent. Without thermal bridging within the building envelope, project teams that design thermally broken balconies or parapets can meet the requirement of LEED v4 Credit 5. Te compatibility of air and vapor barriers — along with sealants, cemen- titious materials, and intumescent freproofng — is critical for building envelope code requirements. Tus, the inadvertent development of a thermal break coating is a workable solution to a nagging design problem. Passing Along Cost Reductions Fluid-applied thermal break coating systems may ofer speed and cost reductions. Unlike structural thermal break products, insulated coatings do not require additional engineering to deter- mine whether they will support the load because they are a nonstructural solution. Coatings can also be more cost-efective than structural products once steel fabrication, installation, and specialized bushings and washers are factored into the equation. As no additional engineering work is needed to create physical thermal breaks, the insulation coatings can be shop- or feld-applied and can be used for both new construction or retro- ft projects. Te costs of thermal break pads compared to fuid-applied thermal break coatings have been recently surveyed, and, according to the reports from fabricators that have recently adopted these coatings systems, the savings appear to be signifcant. Te cost of structural pads and associated washers and bushings were accounted for, and the ¼-inch-thick (0.6 cm) pad costs about $46 while the larger 1-inch (2.5 cm) pad costs $77. Te bushings are $3.27 each and washers $3.21. Generally, the cost per connection runs $400 to $1,000 per connection for structural thermal break pads. By comparison, fuid-ap- plied thermal breaks are costing about $250 per connection, according to the survey.
