Don't Fall! Midwest PMS introduces Permacable — a horizontal lifeline system for use on all of its rail-car sidings. Permacable is manufactured by Sellstrom/RTC of Palatine, Ill., but is marketed and installed on-site by SafeRack, LLC. The product is a synthetic, lightweight cable strung between L- or T-shaped supports that can be spaced up to 200 feet apart (compared to every 30 to 50 feet with traditional steel-cable lifelines). The system's pass- through device allows workers to walk past intermediate supports without having to disconnect their lifeline. Despite being lightweight, Permacable has a tensile strength of 16,000 pounds and is weather-, chemical-, and corrosion-resistant. The cable is bright orange, but turns a bright red when it wears, alerting the operator when it needs to be replaced.
