Flammable Liquids Before tackling the tricky underside of the deck support struc- ture, Ofsharick checked the project's overall progress. Bad weather had set them back more than originally anticipated by creating production delays and access issues for men and equip- ment. But A lpine's been around more than four decades, so it's not surprising they figured out a way to stay productive when the 1,000-foot (304.8 m) mega tankers docked. Since these ships carried flammable liquids, once offload- ing commenced, activities were understandably restricted. Depending on the cargo being offloaded, sometimes the A lpine crew couldn't work at all. W hen they were allowed to work, they still couldn't work near the tankers. But never, while any tanker was unloading, could they operate gear capable of producing sparks: no electric devices, no paint mixers, and definitely no angle grinders. Hey, if a $100 million tanker were to suddenly erupt into a massive fireball, a simple "oops" won't cut it! Here's how A lpine stayed productive when conditions restricted their scope of work: "We set aside work on railings, toe boards, pipes, valves, bollards, and equipment bases for fuel offloading days," said Ofsharick. "By doing so, we could stay out of the way and not lose too much production." Ready to Dive W hen the tankers weren't docked, the crew dove into the under- deck portion of the project. After UHP waterjetting, NACE inspector Plokarz again brought out his CHLOR*TEST kits and made sure soluble salt levels were below specs. For this area, specs called for a glass-flake filled version of Carboguard 690, Carboguard 690 GF. In addition to sharing many properties with Carboguard 690, the glass flake reinforce- ment enhances film strength, impact resistance, and barrier properties, according to the Carboline product data sheet. Mixing the three-component 690 GF begins by separately stirring parts A (4 gallons, 15.
