COATINGSPRO MARCH 2017 43 and all vertical and horizontal caulk joints on the precast were resealed using Tremco's Dy nonic 100 sealant. Both sealants were supplied by SSI Commercial & Highway Construction Materials. A nd all rooms were water tested by Surmac using thermal imaging cameras. "ey really wanted this thing not to leak," Watson said of his instructions. "ere were no ifs, ands, or buts about it." T he final part of the job was about 60 rooms at the hotel 's back, since those were " high rent" rooms that looked directly onto the bay, Watson explained. T hose rooms also had exqui- site balconies, so waiting until after all coating work was completed was helpful since it freed up virtually the entire crew to help out. "W hen [hotel guests] rented those rooms, they specifically wanted those rooms because of the view," Watson said. "ey look directly onto the bay. ose were last, so we had to wait until occupancy rates dropped down. ose were the finish- ing touches." "We had eight or nine people working directly on those balconies," Watson recalled. "We waited to do that until the absolute slowest time, like right before anksgiving." And just in time for the crew to enjoy the holiday — only two days before, according to Watson — the multi-month job was finally complete. All Systems Go W hen all was done, "guests, management, and owners were ecstatic," Watson said. "ey were very, very happy. It was a total transformation of the building." Adding Hilton's waterfront Houston hotel to his repertoire should help make a strong case for more jobs in the future. " T hese hotels often spend millions of dollars on the inside, but it's the outside that's the best bargain on the market," Watson said. " T hat's where you get the big gest bang for your buck. It's the least amount of money you spend, but I promise you, it gets the big gest notice. If people see a building that's run dow n, even if it's had millions of work inside, they won't stay there." Even for an industry veteran like Watson, the thrill of a successful job keeps him going strong and hoping for more related projects in the years ahead. " We really enjoy what we're doing, and we have a lot of fun," Watson said. "I'm 67 years old, and people ask me when I'm going to retire. I say never, because I'm having fun doing this. W hen I stop having fun, maybe I' ll stop." He continued, "But it's getting more exciting now, because I learn more ever y day. T he things that are available now — the technologies and products that are coming around — it's really making our jobs a lot easier and giving customers a lot more quality on what they get as the finished product." Just ask Hilton's NASA hotel, which now blasts into the peak spring and summer season with a fresh, revamped look courtesy of Watson and his team at Surmac. Mission accom- plished!
