Mixed Bag Over the course of the four months of the project, 45 VCGFL crew members completed the work on both the Richard C. Geisinger Sr. branch and SportsWorld facilities. And this was no small task with 63,427 square feet (5,892.6 m²) of roof at the main branch and 43,800 square feet (4,069.2 m²) of roof at the SportsWorld facility! e sheer size of the facilities was not the only daunting part of the job. ere were also many existing roof systems to deal with, and all of them were failing. e roofing substrates at the main branch included severely damaged plywood, damaged shingles, and a high-grade Purlin Bearing Rib (PBR) metal roofing system that was more than 30 years old and was severely damaged. ere was also a built-up hot-mop low-slope roof in between the basketball gym and the locker room at the facility. e SportsWorld roof consisted of a high-grade PBR metal roofing system that was more than 30 years old and installed into the purlins of the building's structure. Given the size of the project, the mix of roofing systems, and the age and condition of the existing roofs, VCGFL called in a roofing consultant, Blake E. Joyce of Joyce Engineering LLC, as well representatives of Mule-Hide Products and Englert Inc. to help choose the best products and approach for the project.
