It then may be followed by a statement such as, "Beginning coating application constitutes contractor's acceptance of substrate and conditions." If you only get one thing out of this article, make sure it is this: Don't get bullied into starting work before you have fully examined the specification, the substrate, and the environment! I have seen flooring contractors break their backs trying to work on projects when other trades are walking over the freshly prepared concrete, generating dust, running direct-fired propane heaters in the work space, and a hundred other no-nos. Trying to proceed with work in these conditions will come back to haunt you, and you will not be able to produce a quality finish if the work space and substrate are not ready. Participating in the Process W hile the specification provides information about your work, it does not generally dictate the "means and methods." It is understood that the contractor is the professional who will take the intent of the specifications and determine how best to perform the work so that it conforms to those speci- fications. But specifications are never perfect. Architects have a big job to do, and often they resort to a cut-and-paste mentality to meet deadlines or stream- line costs. is practice is dangerous as it assumes, wrongly, that each job and coating system that worked for one building will work on another. ere is no one-size-fits-many solution in the wonderful world of coatings. W hile reviewing the bid documents (e.g., plans, specifica- tions, and addenda) prior to bid day, ambiguities should be brought to the attention of the architect through Requests for Information (RFIs). Asking good questions and challenging specifications is a healthy way to partic- ipate in the bid process. If you work in this industry, then you need to know how to read and react to a spec.
