COATINGSPRO SEPTEMBER 2017 71 W ith five years in indus- trial coatings, Anthony Palmer, operations manager at Spray-Tec, has experience both in the field and the office, giving him unique and valuable insight early on in his career. It started when he was in college. Palmer came to a crossroads w ith his undergraduate degree, so he began looking for a new career opportunity. W hat he found was an opening at Spray-Tec. "I started as a field tech to get from A to B, then did some training in sales estimating and really dove in and didn't look back," he recounted. "I really didn't have a plan going in, but working in the field really helped my transition." Family Ties Now tak ing on the role of an estimator in his current position, Pa lmer has heard plent y of horror stor ies from other contractors, but his ex per ience thus far has been relatively smooth — including safet y. "Our number one goa l is doing projects safely." He continued, " We think of our workers as family, and it's our job to equip them w ith the gear and plan to do the job safely. We hang our hat on being a top-notch contractor in the area and surrounding states." Spray-Tec, can be seen as a small company doing large work, including a number of projects, such as a local army base and a well-know n distiller y. " We gain business mostly on word of mouth, but we're redeveloping our marketing approach to target specific projects. With public work, there's no loyalty or pride. Some just want quality, and some just want the low bid. T hat's just not us. We aren't the cheapest for good reasons." Mitigating jobsite risks early on has been another key to Palmer's success, and it has allowed him to avoid having his own cautionary tales. In Columbus, Ohio, while working on a single-ply roof, Palmer and his team were faced with pitfalls, such as countless skylights and hundreds of cars as targets for overspray potential. "But being able to control the outcome and do the job safely and efficiency and minimize the chaos was the goal, and while a few cars did get overspray, a couple over a couple hundred due to proper planning made the project a win for us." W hile Palmer may not yet have the experience and knowledge of someone w ith 25 years in the business, he appreciates those who do, such as from company ow ner Roger Jordan. "Just be humble and honest, and focus on your integrity and character," Palmer explained, noting that, " You can promise something and deliver something else, and they may never know, but as far as being that go-to contractor, you want people to do business w ith you and not just be the low bid." A nd Palmer mentioned that you should "really be able to stand by your safety and quality." Growing the Business Starting out, in addition to the long hours, there are often challenges. "Don't get down," Palmer said. " Take it one day at a time, and do the right thing. We've had some projects where things were missed." But instead of cutting corners, they rolled up their sleeves. "Do it right." With plans to grow, Palmer noted that a key is to "surround yourself with quality employees who have that desire to brand the company as the roofing contrac- tor." He continued, "We're working on pulling in more work and more manpower to sustain the increased volume." Spray-Tec has also made changes at headquarters. ey have worked to improve safety programs, and management and oversight officials have worked to ensure the best quality, communication, and efficiencies in streamlining projects. "We' ll never be at a point of 'Yep, we've reached our ceiling,' so we want to focus on what we want to thrive at: metal coatings appli- cations, foam insulation, and concrete coating projects," Palmer elaborated. Life at Home W hen it comes to his personal life, Palmer acknowledged that the " long hours, long nights, and long weeks," are a reminder that the job never sleeps. But as soon as he gets home, Palmer relishes his time with his infant son. "I work so hard during the week and am still available at home, but in the end, I want to focus on family, and eventually, I' ll find the smooth balance between the two," he added.
