I would guess that the plate thickness after grinding repair should be w ithin the nominal plate thickness range provided by the steel mill. Anyway, as you are proposing, prevention of steel plate pitting is the best way of resolving the argument. And I also encourage you to seek a classification surveyor's opinion for case-by-case situations. Soluble Salts Q: I am a coating newcomer, and I have a question. W hen we take the soluble salt test according to NACE SP 0508-2010, does the conduc- tivity meter need to be certificated or accepted by NACE International, SSPC, or another organization? A: Generally, the conductivity meters do not need to be certi- fied. But they can be. e conductivity standard you use to calibrate the meter should be certified. I always recom- mend using calibration solution before using the meter each day. If the calibra- tion solution is certified, that should satisfy any requirements. at being said, since most inspectors are not that familiar with it, they may require a certificate on the meter if they are working with a third-party inspector. Paint Compatibility Q: How is a two-part epoxy coat over a one-part, zinc-rich aerosol spray paint compatible or not compatible? Will the two-part epoxy's solvent, or thinner, lift the one-part paint and cause weak adhesion on galvanized items? W hat mechanism actually take places? A: e spray question I cannot answer. For that, you need to talk to the epoxy manufacturer to see if it is compatible. As for the second question, it could lift it if it is not compatible. If I am understanding correctly, the break is between the galvanized items and the spray can coating. I have done a lot of coatings over galvanized items in the past. Galvanized items give off a passive film that has to be removed completely or nothing will stick to it. ere is chemical wash some have used. However, I have also seen these fail. I always sandblast the galvanized items before applying a coating, and I've never had a failure doing it this way.
