COATINGSPRO JANUARY 2018 29 women to continue their training in one of their construction programs. What's It Covering? Let's Build Construction Camp for Girls started as a vision to immerse young women in the entire AEC community, giving them a holistic view of this diverse industr y. It was designed to allow them to explore the construction trades, architecture, engineering, and building product manufacturing through hands-on experiences and field trips. Held at ABC's Lehigh Valley training facility in June of 2017, the inaugural camp was an overwhelm- ing success. Twenty young women of varying experiences and capabilities learned key construction principles as they built and finished realistic wall sections. rough this hands-on approach, they experienced carpentry, electrical work, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, masonry, and painting. ey did all of this while being exposed to the ideas of green building, the principles of cement and metal roof manufacturing, and the modeling of architectural design with BIM (Building Information Modeling). e most memorable moment of the experience was the literal flipping of the switch. As part of the electrical component, the girls completed the wiring of a receptacle, switch, and light. After a long day of instruction and building, they flipped the switch to turn on the light for the first time. ey were overcome by excitement. eir smiles beamed from ear to ear as they saw the results of their efforts. It was incredibly rewarding for everyone there. Beyond the specific skills train- ing, this camp seemed to have a profound impact on the young people who attended. rough collaboration in small groups, it provided the girls with real life skills training that they will use the rest of their lives. Problem solving, managing team dynamics, confidence, empowerment, respecting others, listening to instruction, and task execution are all soft skills that naturally evolved during the course of the week-long camp. What's the Cost? is camp experience was free to the trainees, completely underwritten by the local AEC community. Each girl arrived Monday morning and was given a tool bag full of basic supplies that she would use throughout the week. Other costs included building supplies, food, Photos courtesy of Corrosion Technology Systems, Inc.
