Given those constraints, local operator Ningbo Xingang Fuel Storage Co. has often experienced severe corrosion on carbon steel (CS) equipment at its 45,359.2-metric-ton (50,000 ton) crude oil terminal located in Ningbo's Beilun District. In 2017, the company faced a particular challenge in protecting two fire-water cannons, auxiliary fire lines, and associated equipment located adjacent to the water. "We have a bad environment for the corrosion of the equip- ment," said Hu Fanglei, director of operations equipment for the fuel-storage company. "e fire-water cannon has been put into use for five years and has been repaired twice again." Polymer paints and rubber-type coatings had been applied in prior jobs, but they lost their adhesion shortly after applica- tion due to the corrosive environment, the client explained. As a result, to finally get the job right, the fuel-storage company needed both a contractor and a technical system that it could trust to withstand the harsh conditions. "e use of traditional coatings is low in efficiency here, as you have to wait for the first layer to dry before applying the next one," Fanglei said through the use of a Chinese-to-English translator. "Due to its shielding nature, it is hard to detect major flaws during construction, which may cause the equip- ment to fail after being put to use."
