A manufacturer's representative from EonCoat was made available at the Ningbo site to consult with the crew throughout the week-long application process. Three-Step Application Process Safety was a key consideration for the contractors on this project, considering the extreme heights of the fire-water cannons. Personal protective equipment (PPE) worn by the crew included safety helmets, goggles or sandblast masks, dust masks, ear plugs, safety belts, puncture-proof static-proof shoes, protective gloves, and general cotton work clothes. A rope system from Shandong Binzhou Anhui Rope Group Co. was used to access higher areas of the site from the scaffolding system, and the client required a tarp to seal the area to prevent any overspray from reaching nearby offices. Surface preparation was first on the crew's agenda, and it was an opportunity to put their training to the test, considering the unique requirements for the EonCoat system. Using equip- ment from the Anhui Jingde County Electronics Parts Factory, the crew blasted the surfaces using a handheld, 10.2-mm (0.4 inch) sandblasting gun powered by a 37.3-kW (50 hp) air compressor with air pressure at 0.8 MPa (116 psi). e flow was 6.0 m 3 /min. (211.9 cfm), and garnet abrasives were used as the blast media. "e key thing to remember is that you're not going to have to touch the steel to engage in surface prep," A lpert said. e crew blasted the surface to achieve an anchor profile of at least 25.4 to 50.8 microns (1–2 mils). A ll foreign materi- als were removed through the blast in order to allow the tank surface to degrade, or flash rust. Only metal or light iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) were allowed to remain on the surface during coating, since previously painted surfaces require removal of the paint in order for the new coating to form a molecular bond with the steel. Once blasting was complete, the crew pressure washed the substrate with a 15-kW (20.4 hp) high-pressure cleaner machine with flow at 20 L/min. (5.3 gal./min.) to prepare for the applica- tion of the EonCoat, which effectively works as a primer and the second part of the three-part system. "One of the advantages of EonCoat is that you can coat right over flash rust, so you don't have to have a stop-and-go methodology with your blasting," A lpert said. "For us, we actually like flash rust, since it helps us form a better amorphous layer." On this job, that's exactly how it played out for Zhijun and his crew from Wuhan.
