By Adam Beers, Business Manager of the Consulting and Engineering Services Department for KTA Photos courtesy of KTA-Tator The Case of the Storm Water Lining Failure T he performance of a coating on the exterior of a piping system is crucial to preventing corrosion of the substrate. And the interior lining of these systems is just as important. e performance of the interior lining correlates, at least in part, as a result of choosing and applying the correct coating system for the interior. T his article focuses on lining failures that were seen in wastewater and storm drain piping in the state of New York. T hese pipes were installed in the 1980s and touched up or spot repaired in several locations. However, many of these repaired areas are now peeling after only two to three years in ser vice. W hat went wrong? T here were several areas throughout this pipe where premature coating failures were obser ved. Let's look into each area more closely. A Little Background e wastewater industry has several challenges, such as wet and dry service condition variances, chemical attack, and sliding and abrasive wear service. e three key considerations for these systems are to choose a suitable product for the internal lining application, perform an adequate surface preparation and lining system application, and select the correct maintenance strategy (touch-up/ overcoat/remove and replace). Piping Connections On pipe, special attention should be paid to the connections. Connecting large pipes together by welding a support piece to cover the seam is often regarded as an optimal means of pipe connection. However, in a wastewater stream, there are foreign objects that can physically damage The wastewater industry has several challenges, such as wet and dry service condition variances, chemical attack, and sliding and abrasive wear service.
