In addition, samples must be obtained over selected 15-minute periods (those with the highest potential exposure) to evaluate compliance with the STEL. • Analytical methods used on the samples must have an accuracy of plus or minus 25 percent within a statistical confidence level of 95 percent. • Workers must be notified within 15 working days of the results. Consult an Expert It is recommended that employers consult with a quali- fied industrial hygienist or safety professional, such as a certified safety professional (CSP) or certified industrial hygienist (CIH) to develop a sampling plan that will meet OSHA requirements. Use of a lab accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association should ensure that a sample analysis also addresses OSHA requirements. Other requirements of 29 CFR 1910.1024, when exposure limits are exceeded, include the following: • Using engineering and work practice controls; • Using respiratory protection; • Having a written exposure control plan; • Training for all employees with potential inhalation or skin exposure to beryllium; • Making a medical surveillance program available at no cost to the employee to monitor exposed workers identified with a beryllium-related disease or who are reasonably expected to be exposed at or above the action level for more than 30 days per year. Start Evaluating Unlike the OSHA beryllium standards for shipyards and construction (which are on hold for now), general indus- try employers must start evaluating their production and maintenance tasks with potential beryllium exposure, such as abrasive blasting. Abrasive blasting tasks using commonly available abrasives will likely have a potential for exposure.
