"ose APFs only apply if you follow the whole program," said 3M's Johnson. "Respirators can help reduce exposure, but like with any equipment, it's all about the training and use patterns. You can't have it hanging off half of your face, with a full beard, not strapped on, or with cartridges that haven't been changed. It's about following the whole respira- tor training program." e same principles can and should be applied to any safety phase. SafeStart, which offers specialized training guidance on working at height, says basic rules can make a huge difference to worker safety. But to be fully effective, those rules should be paired with regular behavioral train- ing. "ere is no shortcut to addressing human factors," said SafeStart's Prest. As such, proper training can reinforce the values of not only a specific product or piece of equipment and how to use it safely, but also how it fits within a broader jobsite safety plan. "Understanding workers' place in their company's safety ecosystem might drive home the importance of their duty to report dangerous working conditions," said SafeStart's Prest. "If someone notices something is amiss — a paint spill that's unmarked and unaddressed, discarded tools lying around, or a faulty respirator — they might be more likely to report it to protect their colleagues." "A culture of looking out for each other is a game-changer, and it often develops naturally as part of human error reduction training," Prest added. "W hen paired with housekeeping and engineering solutions, it assures a much safer workplace." Overton Safety Training is another training specialist offering OSHA compliance solutions to employers for crane, forklift, aerial, loader, and rigging professionals. In general, 3M's Johnson believes the biggest prior- ity for contractors is to fully comprehend the dangers and hazards associated with each job. If they do, it often makes everything go more smoothly. "A lot of the training comes back to whether the workers really understand the hazards they're working with," Johnson said. To that end, ensur- ing that the safety manuals and training are offered in the language(s) that your crew speaks is crucial to getting them the proper information. Securing Safety Success CoatingsPro Magazine hopes the guidance, tips, and products discussed here can assist applicators in developing the proper safety and PPE plan for each jobsite. By using these types of resources and best practices, contractors should be able to remain in compliance with industry standards and keep their workers safe — thus ensuring the most basic and essential step to overall productivity.
