All About the Air As the team began preparations for the SPF and intumescent coating applications, they faced an additional hurdle. e warehouse structure also contained occupied office space that had to remain open throughout the duration of the job. is meant that extreme care had to be taken to isolate the office space from the area to be sprayed. T he crew air sealed access points between the two areas, pressurized the office space w ith mechanical air using si x A llegro 9533 fans, and monitored the air in the office space throughout the duration of the project. " We provided make-up air at one end of the work area and filtered exhaust at the other. Once the masking and protecting of the spray area was complete, we created one controlled access point that was designated for properly attired personnel only," said Har vey. In keeping with Wedge Roofing's personal protective equipment (PPE) policy, and in accordance with California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (C AL-OSHA), all applicators were outfitted head to toe with chemical-resis- tant Ty vek suits, gloves, and full-face masks with 3M's 7500 series respirators with 5201 filters. According to Harvey, all crew members involved with the SPF application used an A llegro supplied-air system, too. Prep Work Before the crew could begin the SPF application, areas of extreme surface deficiencies were corrected using orbital grind- ers, pneumatic shaving tools, and Sawzalls. "ere were some areas where the surface was too inconsistent to just simply apply the new SPF and coating system. We had to use tools in these areas to create a more acceptable base for the new system," said Harvey. The Main Event It was then time to apply the Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond primer to the entire 7,000-square-foot (650.3 m²) area. is primer ensured maximum bonding adhesion of the new SPF system to the existing DC 315 intumescent coating. e Extreme Bond was applied at a dry film thickness of approxi- mately 1 mil (25.4 microns) using a Graco Magnum Pro X9 and a Graco 3G3 spray gun. A fter careful temperature and humidit y monitor ing, the nor ma l 24 -hour cure time was achieved in 11 hours. " T he cure time was definitely helped a long by the make-up air system we had in place but a lso by the ambient conditions," said Har vey. T he job took place in the midd le of July, so luck ily the Napa Count y weather was ver y cooperative. Temperatures ranged bet ween the 80s and 90s (26.7‒32.2 °C) w ith relatively low humidit y. Once the primer had cured, the crew lost no time in begin- ning the application of Everest Systems' 2-pound (907.2 g) density, Evercell 2.0 spray polyurethane foam. e spray foam was applied using a Graco E-30 reactor-based spray rig and Graco Fusion AP guns. Because the specifications called for the new SPF system to be as smooth as possible, the decision was made to apply the material in two passes of an average of 1 inch (2.5 cm) each. is technique afforded the best opportunity for a smooth, consistent surface characteristic. "A lthough this decision added time to the job, we felt that this approach was the best path to success. We only had one opportunity to get this right," revealed Harvey. After the installation of the Evercell 2.0, the crew applied Sherwin-Williams DTM primer at a dry film thickness of 2.5‒4 mils (63.5‒101.6 microns) using a Graco Magnum Pro X9 and a Graco 3G3 spray gun. e purpose of this primer coat was to ensure optimal adhesion between the SPF and the intumescent coating. "Because the warehouse is a cold storage facility, the SPF and intumescent coating system is exposed to extreme and harsh conditions. We really needed to make sure that there would be an unyielding bond between the SPF and the thermal barrier," said Harvey.
