32 JULY 2018 COATINGSPROMAG.COM Miller, business development manager at T.W. Hicks. "So the A lamodome explored different options for ways to dress up the arena for the Final Four." e facility's design team originally pressed for thin-mil coating systems or a methyl methacrylate (MMA) system for the upgraded floor, but Miller and a local flooring represen- tative from coatings manufacturer Sika Corp. showed them the benefits of the Sikafloor PurCem polyurethane system for durability and low maintenance, topped with multicolored vinyl chips (known as DecoFlake) for aesthetics. "e T.W. Hicks workers had a team approach to the project and were also flexible, which helped," said Katherine Fontenot, senior project manager at Turner. "And the Sika representatives walked us through the process and made us feel comfortable with it." On this job, Miller said the polyurethane system was particularly important given the potential contaminants at a major stadium with a capacity of more than 70,000 people. "It's a heav y-duty broadcast system that offers impact resistance, heav y-load resistance, and chemical resistance," Miller explained. "For the amount of acid [the floor] is going to take, we had to have a chemical-resistant topcoat, and with that mortar bed, it gives it a very heav y-load capability." Zone Coverage Basketball teams often use zone coverages to concentrate on specific areas, and on this job, the flooring crew used a similar tactic. With the A lamodome remaining open throughout the renovations for various events — including football games, The building was open for events during the course of the project. That meant that the coatings crew had to stay in constant communication with city officials, building staff, and the general contractor.
