Hurricane Sandy Cleanup "Retro-Coat was selected for this project because it's designed somewhat outside what normal coatings are used for…to eliminate vapors from coming into the building," said Regenesis Product Rep Peter Grant. contaminant vapor intrusion without the need for additional concrete protection." It is an excellent option for the Peter Cooper Village's residential buildings in particular as the two-part system is odorless and contains no volatile organic compounds (VOC). It also provides an aesthetic, fnished foor and is easy to clean — in addition to its imperviousness to vapor and moisture. Saying Goodbye According to Grant, there is now greater liability and new regulation on allowances of potentially hazardous vapor intrusion inside buildings. And the Retro-Coat helps to keep those vapors, such as the benzene vapors, from coming up through the slab into the air. "We created Retro-Coat to tackle issues of existing structures," he said. "We're the frst product in the United States — possibly the world — to do it for these brownfeld constituents. Most people think of water vapor, but these chemicals are very diferent than aggressive solvents and can impact housing prices." Using the right products, particularly after such a devastating event as Hurricane Sandy, is important. Contaminants can seep into the soil of prime real estate, such as Peter Cooper Village. Terefore, coating manufacturers and installers have been taking proactive steps to protect residents before any kind of vapor can enter their homes. For this project, once completed, the residents of Peter Cooper Village shouldn't have to worry about any vapors or contaminants that Hurricane Sandy may have brought with her. Te residents should be able to enjoy an improved quality of life thanks to the work of Manhattan Concrete Design and a product like Retro-Coat. And fnally, with their newly fnished basements, they will hopefully have at least one repercussion from Hurricane Sandy repaired. CP As the name suggests, Retro-Coat is intended to be used on existing buildings, another feature that makes the product unique and the best solution for the Peter Cooper Village project. In this case, the architects recommended the product to Manhattan Concrete Design. "Tis product is ideal for any site that has contamination from another industry: gas station sites, former manufacturing sites, etc.," noted Grant. It has also been subjected to a wide variety of chemical resistance studies, including a long-term permeation study by a third-party in a lab that specializes in this type of indoor air testing. Tis particular test involved a six-month study that tested for perchloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethane (TCE), and benzene permeation. After an event like Hurricane Sandy, it's crucial that the coatings contractors choose the right products to use for restoration. For the residents, the epoxy coating will hopefully make a big difference in the post-Sandy rehab. Write in Reader Inquiry #334 COATINGSPRO JANUARY 2014 49
